DRAWING the second row over a mile is unlikely to stop Sunny Sanz’s winning streak.
Winning his three outings in stylish fashion, Sunny Sanz will begin from barrier nine in a Sweepstakes heat in Launceston on Sunday night.
Despite the seemingly awkward starting position, the Kent Rattray-trained freshman is the one to beat against a field consisting of maidens and debutants.
“I expected him to draw back there as it was done on assessment,” Rattray said. “The Final is random draw, so he is a bit of a chance to get the front line.
“I can’t see the back line being a problem for him.
“He has led or sat outside them so far, but I believe he is better when trailing them, so we might find out this week.
“There are a few first starters in the race, so you never know how good they could be, but I wouldn’t swap him for anything at the moment.”
Should all go to plan, Sunny Sanz will contest the Sweepstakes Final in Hobart on May 18 before Rattray primes the son of Sportswriter for the Tasbred Series.
Heats of the futurity begin on June 8, with the $40,000 decider scheduled to be conducted in Hobart on June 22.
“The Tasbred is the next main aim with him, plus the Golden Slipper has to be reprogrammed, so I will look at that depending where they slot it in,” Rattray said.
“If he is still going well enough at the time, I will also look at a Breeders’ Crown heat further down the track.”
