FORMER New Zealand superstar Lazarus has left onlookers in awe with his American qualifying performance at the Meadowland today.
Driven by Yannick Gingras, Lazarus led early before being eased to take the trail behind North America Cup winner Lather Up as the field travelled in ‘Indian file’.
Angled away from the pegs around the home turn, the son of Bettors Delight sprinted to an easy win from Lather Up and Blood Line.
With final quarter covered in 25.3 seconds, Lazarus stopped the clock in 1:48.3 under a strong hold.
Trained by Jimmy Takter for Taylor Made Stallions, the five-year-old is only expected to have a handful of starts in the northern hemisphere, including two races at the Red Mile in October and the Breeders’ Crown at Pocono.
One of the most electrifying pacers produced in modern times, Lazarus was prepared on the Shaky Isles by Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen, where he won 35 of his 45 starts, with nine placings also to his credit.
With earnings of $3,663,438, Lazarus is third richest Australasian standardbred and the richest stallion.
Along with the Inter Dominion, Lazarus’ victories include two New Zealand Cups, Hunter and Victoria Cups, Chariots Of Fire, Victoria, New Zealand and Great Northern Derbys, New Zealand Messenger and Taylor Mile.
