Talented youngsters register significant wins
A PAIR of talented youngsters registered significant wins in Shepparton last night.
Making his Australian debut, Hiranya outstayed his rivals to complete a strong victory over 2190 metres.
After racing in the ‘death seat’ the Craig Turnbull-trained gelding bullocked his way to a five-and-a-half metre win from Repelling.
Rockandance was two metres away third in 1:57.7.
Impressed with the three-year-old’s performance, Turnbull plans to head across Bass Strait in a fortnight for the Tasmania Derby.
“We’ve been very happy with the way he has come along since he got here and expected a good run from him,” Turnbull said.
“He showed last night he can do a bit of work and still hit the line well.
“That was down in grade, but he has improvement in him and the Tassie Derby will be a good test for him.”
Hiranya was partnered by Turnbull’s daughter, Abbey, with the concession driver helping the teal pants team reach a sensational milestone.
Abbey, along with close to 300 reinswomen throughout Australia and New Zealand, is sporting specially-designed driving pants between February 1 and March 15 as part of the extraordinary crusade to raise crucial funding and valuable awareness towards ovarian cancer research and education.
Each state’s governing body, various principal clubs and the TAB have combined to donate $400 to WomenCan per victory.
Western Australia has taken a different approach and is donating $15,000.
Abbey’s success was the 300th win of the Australian campaign, fittingly on International Women’s Day.
“What a great result for the teal team,” Abbey said. “It’s such a wonderful charity and every win helps the cause.
“I’m just glad I have been able to contribute.”
