WITH all the excitement around Leap To Fame and his bid to win the TAB Eureka, another Queenslander has been all but forgotten as far as publicity is concerned.

And while Speak The Truth will start double-figure odds in Saturday night’s big race, the beautifully-bred gelding has earned his place alongside the elite three and four-year-olds and may yet prove the surprise packet of the race.

Trained by Shannon Price and to be driven by former Kiwi reinsman Adam Sanderson, Speak The Truth earned his place in the big race when the four-year-old gelding took out the $231,000 The Hayden at Albion Park in mid-July to earn Racing Queensland’s slot in the big race.

The Shannon Price-trained gelding downed Captain Shuffles and Apollo Dreamz to fill their ‘slot’, scoring by 1.6m in a 1:54.9 mile rate after starting the $1.85 favourite.

Sanderson has a good record at Menangle and has travelled there several times with Price’s horses and they usually come away with the cash.

“I am pumped for this, it has been a long time coming as the build-up to a race like this is huge,” Sanderson told Racing Queensland.

“It is one of the things that you always strive for, to be involved in the biggest races and as we know, now this is the biggest race in the world.

“The opportunity cannot come any bigger for a driver like me.

“It is a massive thrill for me, the race is worth $2.1 million so if we are lucky enough to win it, it would be a huge pay day for us.

“To be in the inaugural running and being a part of history, it is definitely a highlight of my career.”

Driving in our richest-ever race was probably the last thing on Sanderson’s mind when he made a massive move from New Zealand to settle in Queensland in 2012.

The then 23-year-old took the gamble and arrived to be stable foreman and driver for Darrel Graham.

He has driven more than 80 winners in each season since and now gets the pick of the drives for Shannon Price and her handy team of pacers and trotters.

Speak The Truth may yet provide the absolute highlight at Menangle tonight.

“From the first time I jumped off the plane, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into,” said Sanderson.

“The Grahams put me in good stead and the last couple of years I have really gone on with it.

“I get to drive all these nice horses now and I couldn’t imagine 10 years ago when I made that move that I would be here where I am now.”
