CHAMPION reinsman Luke McCarthy always has respect for his rivals.

And he showed that in scoring a commanding win in today’s $150,000 Three-Year-Old Fillies Breeders Challenge final at Tabcorp Park Menangle.

Driving one of the two favoured runners Eye Keep Smiling, McCarthy knew he needed a plan to beat the other star three-year-old Major Delight, who had the better draw.

So, the master reinsman waited until well in the straight before throwing down the gauntlet to Major Delight, who had the softer run at the head of affairs.

“I just wanted to sit off Major Delight for as long as I could,” McCarthy explained after Eye Keep Smiling scored a strong victory, beating his chief rival by 1.7m in a 1:52.7 mile rate.

Sky Blu (Jack Trainor) flashed home from well back for an eye-catching third, but 11 metres further afield.

“She’s a good filly, for sure,” said McCarthy as he brought Eye Keep Smiling back to the enclosure.

“She got the all-round game, she’s strong and she’s fast.

“She’s just out of that great family and now gives the Gibsons at Success Stud a superstar filly to breed on form.

“And that’s just great for the sport.”

McCarthy said he and his trainer/wife Belinda had not yet discussed whether they would head to the Breeders Crown in Victoria.

“We just wanted to get through today and this Group 1 first,” he said.

“She loves this track and I think when the Ladyship Mile comes around next year, this horse will be a major player in that race, for sure.”
