AUSTRALIAN trotter Tough Monarch will have to be just that at Alexandra Park on Saturday night.
Poised to contest the Trotters’ Inter Dominion Final, Tough Monarch has received a disastrous draw for trainer Rickie Alchin.
To Alchin’s dismay, the son of Monarchy will begin from barrier 11.
Reacting to Tough Monarch’s starting position, TAB Fixed Odds have listed him at $16.
“The draw hasn’t made it easy on him,” Alchin said. “He is going to find it hard from there.
“One positive from it is the race is over 2700 metres, so he has plenty of time to get into the race.
“We’ve just got to hope he can get an even shot at them.”
Despite the draw Alchin remains confident in Tough Monarch’s prospects after the squaregaiter made it through the gruelling heats unscathed.
“He’s come through the heats fine and is very well within himself,” Alchin said. “I’m thrilled with the way he has handled the series.
“This week is all about keeping him happy as he doesn’t need much work on his fitness.”
Citing Winterfell as the one to beat, Alchin believes the prestigious Group One is “a wide open affair.”
Winner of his first and third round heats, Winterfell has drawn to lead from gate two.
Rated as a $17 chance with TAB Fixed Odds before the Championship, the son of Majestic Son heads wagering $1.70.
“Winterfell has been terrific in the series and has drawn perfectly in the Final,” Alchin said. “He’s the one to beat from there.
“That said, it is an extremely even field and you wouldn’t be surprised no matter which of them won.
“It certainly will come down to who get the right run on the night.”
