A BACK row draw has made life difficult for popular pacer Messini in Saturday night’s Mildura Cup.
Chasing his fourth provincial feature of the season, Messini will begin from the outside of the second line for trainer Brent Lilley.
The son of Art Major has already enjoyed success in the Swan Hill, Bendigo and Terang Cups.
“We knew what the draw was going to be like given it’s done on metro class, but it certainly doesn’t help, especially on a track such as Mildura,” Lilley said. “It is what it is, now it’s a matter of getting the right run and conditions to bring him into the race.”
Beginning from the same barrier in his heat earlier this week, Messini dead-heated for third behind Sams The Master and Rockstar Angel. Shakahari was also third.
“He did a bit of work in his heat, but has pulled up fine and is ready to go again,” Lilley said. “He’s a wonderful horse, which just keeps getting out there and doing his best.”
Lilley will also be represented by Lets Elope, which will begin alongside his stablemate.
Lets Elope finished fourth in the qualifier won by Im The Boss, which Lilley regards as the one to beat from gate two.
“Im The Boss did his share of work in the heat and won in track record time,” Lilley said. “From the draw he is going to take a lot of running down.”
