A TRIP across the Tasman is on the cards for rising star Duke Of Wellington.

Thrilled with the four-year-old’s tough win in last night’s Melton Plate at Tabcorp Park, co-owner Merv Butterworth revealed he is considering sending Duke Of Wellington back to New Zealand.

Since arriving from the Shaky Isles the son of American Ideal has had five starts for champion Victorian horsewoman Kerryn Manning for three wins and two placings.

Should Duke Of Wellington make the return journey to his homeland he will remain in Manning’s care.

Butterworth’s targets include The Messenger, Taylor Mile and Harness Jewels.

“At this stage I am considering sending over to New Zealand for the main four-year-old races,” Butterworth, who races his team with his wife, Meg, said.

“He will go over with Kerryn just like Arden Rooney did when they won the New Zealand Cup.

“I will have to work out the details, but that is the way I am planning to go.”

With Manning in the cart during his latest win Duke Of Wellington began well from barrier four to be settled outside the leader, War Dan, which found the front from gate three.

Forging his way to the lead close to the post, the gelding scored by a metre-and-a-half from the pacemaker, with Rishi a metre away third.

Covering the last half in 56.9 seconds, Duke Of Wellington rated 1:54.6 over 2240 metres.

“I said before the race he was going well and I have a fair opinion of him,” Butterworth said. “He ran to expectations and did it well.

“It was a terrific drive by Kerryn to control the tempo from the breeze.”
