THEY’RE not looking to run a record, but they will if required.

That’s the warning from Jarrod Alchin ahead of Saturday night’s New South Wales Breeders’ Challenge Final.

Alchin has two runners in the colts’ and geldings’ division, with each ready to establish a blistering time around Club Menangle.

Undefeated from seven starts, My Ultimate Byron won his semi last weekend in 1:50.9 to become the fastest two-year-old gelding in the southern hemisphere.

My Ultimate Ronnie captured his qualifier in 1:50.4 – a just a tenth of a second outside the Australasian two-year-old record.

Bar Room Banta set the mark last season by winning his semi in 1:50.3.

Stating the pair have “pulled up exceptionally well”, Alchin declared both are ready to break the magical 1:50 stance if needed.

“We’re going out there to win, not run a record,” Alchin said. “If it takes a record to win though, they’re ready to do just that.

“I’m positive they are both capable of breaking 1:50 if they have to, but only if they have to.

“You’ve got to remember, Smaltese, which is the main danger, broke the record when he trialled in 1:50.2 a few weeks ago!

“I’ve got no doubt the winner will have to go at least that quick.”

To be driven by Cameron Hart, My Ultimate Byron has drawn barrier 11 but slots into nine with the removal of the emergency.

TAB Fixed Odds have the Australian Pacing Gold purchase listed as the $2.40 favourite.

Also an APG buy, My Ultimate Ronnie is the equal second elect at $2.90 from gate eight.

Chris Geary has been booked to drive ‘Ronnie’.

Smaltese, which was also bought from the APG Sale, is at $2.90 from barrier six.

“It’s a super race,” Alchin said. “Hopefully it goes our way on the night.”
