WHILE her win caught most punters off guard Vincenzina’s success at Tabcorp Park Menangle tonight didn’t come as a shock to her trainer.

Capturing a New South Wales Breeders’ Challenge semi-final, Vincenzina scored at $34 with the TAB.

Trained by Ross Adams, the daughter of Betterthancheddar was always “a good chance” according to the horseman.

“I was pleasantly surprised she won, but it didn’t come as a shock to me,” Adams said. “I felt she was in with a good showing if she got the right run.

“She had never raced the favourite before but had competed against most of the others and handled them well.”

Driven to perfection by Adams, Vincenzina was positioned in the one-one early from barrier seven before being pushed back a position as the $1.65 public elect Pelosi was sent forward to test the pacemaker, Didnt I, from the ‘death seat’.

Four-deep around the last bend, Vincenzina unleashed a scintillating sprint along the home straight to complete a metre-and-a-half win from Pelosi, with Eye Can Run a metre away third.

“I knew she would finish off well but at the top of the straight I thought the favourite had gotten away from us,” Adams said.

“She does have a strong sprint and was coming home hard, it was just a matter of how much the other one had left.”

Taking her record to three wins and a second from five starts, the two-year-old covered the mile in 1:54, with her time half a second quicker than A Rainbow Delight in the following semi.

Driven by Todd McCarthy for Queensland trainer Chantal Turpin, A Rainbow Delight accounted for Vantori Hanover and Michelle Lee Mach.

An Australian Pacing Gold graduate, the filly stretched her tally to two wins and three seconds from six starts.
