VETERAN gelding Avonnova will continue his charge towards another milestone when he competes at Albion Park tonight.
Engaged in the Lord Mayors’ Cup, the Ian Gurney-trained 11-year-old is edging closer towards $1million in earnings.
With his record sitting on 54 wins and 51 placings from 164 starts, the son of Art Major has a bankroll of $932,565, with Gurney is confident the free-legged wonder can join the Magic Millionaires’ Club.
“Given the way he is racing, there is no reason why he won’t keep going for a while yet, so he’s a good chance of passing the million dollar earnings,” Gurney said.
“There are some good options for him during the next month, so hopefully he will do well in those and move closer to $1million.”
Along with this weekend’s assignment, Avonnova has been aimed at the Be Good Johnny Sprint on December 2.
A fortnight later he will tackle the Group Two Queensland Cup.
As for his pending start, Avonnova has drawn to settle close to, or in, the lead from barrier four.
Gurney also has Ideal Scott drawn in six, while stablemate Our Hi Jinx will begin from the second row.
“I couldn’t be happier with him,” Gurney said. “He’s racing like a horse half his age.
“Ideal Scott and Our Hi Jinx are both working well and only need a touch of luck to be in the finish.”
