AN OVERDUE victory in Melton has broken two long droughts from the winners’ circle.

Capturing the opening event on the card, Wattlebank Flyer registered his first triumph in 34 months.

Scoring as a ripe 12-year-old, Wattlebank Flyer was driven by Sean O’Sullivan who was only 13 when the son of Panspacificflight made his debut in 2015!

Rating 2:00.7 over 2240 metres, Wattlebank Flyer accounted for Four Lonely Nights and Glenline.

The gelding’s previous win was in Redcliffe on April 29, 2021 when trained by Alan Grimsey.

Now in the care of Graeme McIntosh, Wattlebank Flyer, or Wally as he is affectionately-known, provided the veteran horseman with his first win in almost a decade.

McIntosh’s previous success came via Run Rabbit Run in Geelong on February 27, 2016 with Neil McCallum in the cart.

“We got him to use as a working partner and never had intentions of racing him,” McIntosh said. “But he was feeling so good, we figured we’d step up his work and see how he goes.

“He has thrived on the work, goes about his duties like a horse half his age and is one happy Wally.

“He dragged a flat tyre that last lap, which made his win all the better.”

As for his lengthy period between victories, McIntosh was simply thrilled to be back on the winners’ list.

“It’s been a while and it is good to get that winning feeling again,” McIntosh said. “He’d been on a high National Rating for a while, but is back down to a lower grade which suits him.

“I’ll just keep finding suitable races, including Cranbourne on Saturday.

“He’s drawn wide in barrier seven, but on his last few runs, he should go close.”
