VETERAN pacer Riverboat Jasper caused a minor upset with a dashing return to racing in Devonport last night.
First-up since last March, Riverboat Jasper proved too slick for his opposition to capture the NWTLHA Cup for trainer Wayne Campbell.
“The old fella went pretty well,” Campbell said. “He had a good spell and come back feeling good.
“He usually runs pretty well first-up. He is a nine-year-old but doesn’t seem to have any problems and gets around really good.
“I was confident of him running a good honest race like he always does, but the win was a bit more than expected.”
Driven by Rohan Hillier, Riverboat Jasper began solidly from his 20-metre handicap to settle towards the tail of the field as Another Swinger led from the front line.
Sustaining a strong three-wide run, the son of Roverboat King completed a two-and-a-half metre win from Perfect Mach, with Rockin An Runnin six-and-a-half metres away third in 2:04.4 for the 2645-metre stand.
“I’m quite pleased with him,” Campbell said. “The stands suit him better than mobiles as he isn’t that quick out of the gate.
“He had to withstand a protest from the runner-up, but he came away with the win.
“I haven’t really got any plans for him at this stage just take them as they come.
“Besides if make too many plans too many things can go wrong!”
