FORMER Victorian Keep On Rocking has become Australia’s fastest pacer.
Trained by ex-patriot Aussie, Chris Scicluna, Keep On Rocking grabbed the slice of history at Dover Downs during the weekend.
Driven by Pat Berry, the son of Rocknroll Hanover led throughout from barrier five to score from Penzance Hanover and Highalator.
By stopping the clock in 1:48.2, Keep On Rocking slashed half a second from Anything For Love’s record.
Anything For Love, which has since been sold to American interests, set his mark at Tabcorp Park Menangle on February 17, 2018.
Only four southern hemisphere pacers – all Kiwis – have gone quicker than Keep On Rocking.
My Field Marshal heads the list with his 1:46.9 win in last season’s Miracle Mile, followed by Have Faith In Me (1:47.5), Adore Me (1:47.7) and Nike Franco 1:48.
It’s interesting to note the three fastest times were all registered at Menangle.
Jilliby Kung Fu and Majordan are the only other Australian-bred pacers to better 1:49, which they also did at Menangle!
Working to the lead in a 26.1-second opening quarter, Keep On Rocking then covered the splits in 27.3, 27.2 and 27.1 seconds.
“I told Pat to go out there and drive him like he is the best horse in the race as he had been working the house down,” Scicluna said. “Pat said he could have gone quicker if needed.
“Given the right opportunity he can pace a mile in 1:47!”
