PERSEVERANCE – that’s the key to Majestic Tilly’s form according to trainer Garth Hurrell.

Making her debut as a two-year-old in November 2021, Majestic Tilly finally broke her maiden status when she proved too good at Globe Derby a fortnight ago.

Runner-up at her following start, the daughter of Majestic Son was back in the winners’ circle thanks to her impressive performance last night.

“She is finally showing the ability I always knew she had,” Hurrell said. “In fact, I have been confident for the last three starts.

“It’s taken a while to get her where I’ve got her, but now we’re hopping away.

“In her defence, there have been a few issues with her and myself during the past couple of years, but those are behind us.”

Majestic Tilly’s issues have been “those little things”, but Hurrell’s setbacks had the potential to be fatal.

Along with a serious track work accident, the 77-year-old horseman was struck down by a bout of pneumonia.

“I was working Calcavado when he bolted on me,” Hurrell recalled. “I was only jogging him but he decided it was time to party and I had no control whatsoever.

“We hit a big gum tree and I blacked out. I popped a shoulder out and damaged my knees. Then after I was over that I got pneumonia.

“Tilly is one of those horses which can get into trouble no matter where you put her.

“She has hurt a leg a couple of times, which put her out for a while, and has had a few of those little things that mean you have to let them off and get going again.”

As for her success, Majestic Tilly was driven by Corey Johnson to lead throughout over 2230 metres in 2:06.9 as Tenlilfonzies and Atout filled the placings.

“I hadn’t set my targets very high with her as trotters can always make an idiot of you, but now she’s going alright I might aim for a Saturday night meeting,” Hurrell said.

“There is a race for her in 10 days and I’ll take the reins in that one.”
