WONDER mare Captains Mistress is poised to make her racing return this evening.

With connections setting their sights on the Victoria Cup, Captains Mistress is set to contest the A D Turnbull Free-For-All at Club Menangle.

The Victoria Cup is scheduled to be conducted in Melton on October 17.

The daughter of Captaintreacherous hasn’t raced since capturing the Inter Dominion at Albion Park on July 18.

Building a solid record as a two and three-year-old with eight wins – including at Group One level – and seven placings from 19 starts, Captains Mistress has been a revelation since joining the all-conquering Jason Grimson stable.

Captains Mistress boasts an impeccable 12 wins from 13 outings for Grimson, with her only defeat a fifth in the Miracle Mile at Club Menangle on March 14.

The four-year-old’s victories include five Group Ones and a Group Three.

As for her pending assignment, Captains Mistress has drawn to complete a successful comeback from barrier one with Cameron Hart in the sulky.

A recent trial winner in 1:53.2 over 2300 metres, Captains Mistress is a $1.15 TAB Fixed Odds favourite, with Kingman the only other runner under double figures at $8.50.

Winner of last season’s Victoria Cup, Kingman will begin from gate four for trainer Luke McCarthy.

First-up from a five-month spell a fortnight ago, Kingman failed to produce his best when a 12-metre eighth after breaking stride at the start.

McCarthy is also aiming Kingman at the Victoria Cup.

Along with Captains Mistress, Grimson will be represented by Hi Manameisjeff, which has drawn wide in barrier seven.

Third when first-up from a three-month spell a fortnight ago, Hi Manameisjeff will be driven by star young reinsman Jye Coney.

Another Victoria Cup candidate, the son of Art Major is on the third line of betting at $10.
