ONA ROCKY BEACH
Young becoming the King of claimers

ASTUTE trainer Shane Young is quickly becoming the King of claimers.
Having captured last season’s Claiming Cup with Power Of Attorney, Young completed consecutive wins in the feature thanks to Ona Rocky Beach’s performance at Globe Derby last night.
Successful in his heat last weekend, Ona Rocky Beach proved too slick in the decider as he led home a stable quinella.
“I was very confident with him given his work and his win in the heat, which he did after sitting in the breeze,” Young said.
“He can get fierce so I told Michael (Harding, driver) if he gets to the breeze let him run a bit, which he did.
“His work since then had also been solid, so I knew he was ready to win again.”
With Harding back in the cart, Ona Rocky Beach overcame the inside of the back row to account for Maywyns Zephyr and Centonic in 1:57.5 over 1800 metres.
“I was glad when he was able to get away from the pegs as the biggest concern was getting caught in a pocket,” Young said. “After that he was able to make his own luck and won well.
“On the home turn I thought Maywyns Zephyr would eat him up, but Ona Rocky Beach kept finding.”
With no major plans in mind for Ona Rocky Beach, Young will select suitable race as they become available.
“I’ve got nothing special in mind for him,” Young said. “I want to place him where I think he can win, which means he will just keep going around in the claimers.”
