Colt set to steal Queensland Sale spotlight

ASSOCIATED with a cavalcade of stars dating back to the 1970’s, Wayne Honan has a single offering at the Australian Pacing Gold Brisbane Yearling Sale at Ipswich Turf Club on Sunday, February 8.

It is Lot 43, a colt by the emerging siring force Captain Crunch from the successful Art Major mare Hughie’s Sister NZ. This is her second foal.

Her first issue, Mister Americano, captured a heat of last year’s APG Brisbane Sales Graduate before being runner-up in the Final. He also won a heat of the Bathurst Gold Crown and qualified for the Vicbred Super Series and Breeders Crown Finals.

Honan and his partner Anna Woodmansey bought the royally-bred Hughie’s Sister in foal to American Ideal in 2022 and Mister Americano is the result.

“She’s since produced the yearling colt, a colt foal by Captain Crunch and is in foal to King Of Swing,” Woodmansey said.

Besides Hughie’s Sister, Honan and Woodmansey are breeding from the APG and dual New South Wales Breeders Challenge winner Pelosi and the Listed winner Jeseeka.

Wayne Comerford, of Stanley River Bloodstock, who is preparing the colt for the Brisbane sale, is suitably impressed by the youngster.

“He’s a powerfully built fella who’s got a bit of presence about him,” Comerford said.

Hughie’s Sister is from former outstanding Kiwi racemare Alta Serena, one of the richest and fastest daughters of a champion sire and broodmare sire in Fake Left.

She won 20 races – six at Group level – including the NZ DB Fillies’ Series, QBred Triad, NZ Easter Cup and NZ Queen Of Hearts for earnings of $593,618.

At the stud Alta Serena produced five winners with four inside 2:00, headed by the NZ Spring Cup and Queensland Flashing Red victor Hughie Green ($261,395) and the exported Hughie Junior ($278,248).

The colt is eligible for the Australian Pacing Gold sales-race series, QBred and Vicbred.
