Confident of extending strong affiliation

ALREADY the feature’s most successful competitor, Royce Gregory is determined to extend his strong association with the J C Caffyn Plate.

An event for drivers with Indigenous heritage, Gregory has turned the annual race into his ‘pet project’ as the only triple Plate winner.

Last season McKayler Barnes joined Jessica Prior as the only dual winners.

Set to contest Saturday night’s edition at Club Menangle, Gregory is positive he can claim a fourth victory.

“I’ve had a bit of luck in the race and hopefully that will be the case again on Saturday night,” Gregory said. “I look forward to the race every year as it is always a bit of fun.

“I don’t necessarily see a lot of the drivers throughout the year, so it is always good to catch up with them as well.”

Although he will partner Dance For Glory from a wide draw, Gregory is confident the KerryAnn Morris-trained gelding remains among the leading chances.

Given the son of Artsplace is a last start winner of the National Trotguide Pace in Newcastle, it is difficult to disagree with Gregory’s assessment.

“I’m going into it feeling very confident,” Gregory said. “The draw isn’t ideal, but may suit his racing pattern.

“If we can get the right run we can play a role in the finish.”

Gregory’s rivals including Barnes, who will drive the Jason Grimson-prepared Ideal Escape.

Also a last start winner, Ideal Escape has drawn gate six.
