WELL-TRIED pacer Thumbs Up has been given just that from his latest trainer.

Bred and making his debut in New Zealand, Thumbs Up spent a short stint in Victoria with premiership winning horseman Andy Gath before being transferred to South Australia.

In less than a year as a ‘Croweater’ the son of Mach Three passed through two local stables before arriving in Dean Girardi’s barn.

Proving his versatility, Thumbs Up has won for each trainer!

According to Girardi, however, Thumbs Up is a test on patience.

“He is a funny bugger and I don’t think too many people get along with him, which is why he had two trainers in SA before getting to me,” Girardi said. “I’m a funny bigger too so we’re a match!

“He’s got his ways and can push you to the limit at times, but I get along alright with him.”

Having his seventh start for the astute horseman at Globe Derby last weekend Thumbs Up proved too slick by leading throughout over 1800 metres.

Rating 1:58.2, the gelding notched his second win for Girardi as Come On Sloopy and Above Average filled the placings.

“He’s no superstar but can win his races,” Girardi said. “He went pretty good a few nights ago, and going on that performance, he’ll keep going through the grades.

“One problem is he can be difficult if he’s in a mood. For example, I’ve entered him again for Saturday night and he may go terrible if that’s his attitude or he will come out and win!”
