Forgotten star’s big step along comeback trail

FORGOTTEN star Alpha Male will take an important step along the comeback trail tonight.

Once touted as the most exciting squaregaiter in the state, Alpha Male has been sidelined since capturing the Need For Speed Prince Final in March 2019.

Trained by Emma Stewart, the son of Majestic Son captured the Melton-based Group One by 34 metres, rating 1:56.9 over 1720 metres.

Before injury halted his career, Alpha Male completed three wins and two placings from five starts, with his victories including the Group One Home Grown Classic.

“It’s been a long time since he raced,” Stewart said. “He’s had ongoing knee issues which have kept him out for so long.

“This time in he has stood up really well and we’re as confident as you can be with a horse with his history that he can stand up to the rigours of racing.”

Should the stallion return to his best Stewart will take aim at several majors during summer.

“He’s still lightly-assessed, so he’ll work through the grades,” Stewart said. “If he can continue the path he was on early in his career he should have no trouble getting to open class.

“First things first though, which is getting through his trial tonight.”
