‘Greybeard’ pacer out to reclaim record
EVERGREEN pacer Don Boston will attempt to regain his share of a record when he returns to Club Menangle on Saturday night.
Rewind to February 11 and Don Boston was the co-holder of the mantle for the most wins around the 1400-metre circuit.
The 14-year-old shared the record of 26 victories with Cash N Flow, Under Worked, Drop The Hammer and Tough Monarch before the latter claimed the title outright with his success that evening.
In what will be his first appearance at the world class venue for the season, Don Boston has drawn to “have a serious crack” and re-joining Tough Monarch at the top.
Set to compete over a mile, the Brad Abbott-trained ‘greybeard’ will begin from barrier three.
“He hasn’t been to Menangle for a while but is due for another go there,” Abbott said. “He has drawn well and I will send him straight to the front then see what happens.
“Titian Raider would be the one to beat and will no doubt keep us honest if we get the front.”
Stating his primary objective is to have “the old fella do his best”, Abbott admitted reclaiming the record is an extra incentive.
“It would be nice if he can get back on top of the record,” Abbott said. “But I can’t ask too much of a 14-year-old.
“He’s feeling good, enjoying his racing and has a good draw, so he does get his chance.
“This is a little tougher on what he has been racing against and beating lately, but he’ll be competitive.”
