IT TAKES a brave person to turn down the opportunity to earn $1million and an even braver person to back their decision.

If you’re wondering whether such an individual exists, the answer is Yes!

Not only did Nathan Turnbull decline “several good offers” to be in such an enviable position, he stands by his convictions.

Turnbull trains rising star Better Be The Best, which attracted the attention of The Eureka slot holders after capturing the New South Wales Derby at Club Menangle on March 4.

The world’s richest harness event, the inaugural $2.1million The Eureka is set to be run at the world class venue on Saturday night.

Turnbull and Better Be The Best will still be in action but in a support race elsewhere on the card.

“We got several good offers to have him in The Eureka, but it was decided it’s too early for him to be taking on the top four-year-olds,” Turnbull said. “He can still go in it next year when he has more experience and matured a bit.

“In The Eureka he’d be taking on the likes of Leap To Fame, which is shaping up to be a freak, and the Miracle Mile winner, Catch A Wave, as one of the outsiders.

“Instead he is in the Breeders’ Challenge Blue Final, which is a weaker field and he is the $1.10 favourite.

“He’s got a much better chance of winning which will see him pick up the same prizemoney as he would have to run at least fourth in The Eureka to get.”

To be driven by Turnbull, Better Be The Best has drawn barrier 11, but slots into nine with the removal of the emergencies.

“He has come along nicely since his heat win and is ready to go,” Turnbull said. “I trialled him in Bathurst a couple nights ago and he went great, coming home in 55 and change.

“The draw is not the best, but he is good enough to overcome that.”
