IT TOOK longer than anticipated by Cullenburn has finally broken his South Australian maiden.

Joining astute trainer Paul Cavallaro’s stable last October, Cullenburn has been successful in Mildura but found wanting closer to home.

To Cavallaro’s delight the gelding corrected the anomaly at Globe Derby yesterday.

“He has been around the mark but it has taken a while,” Cavallaro said. “One problem that has created is he hasn’t been able to go in those cup heats because it’s done on prizemoney.

“That’s why I took him back to Mildura and he ran a good second which saw him pick up $1800, which is only about $400 less than what he got for winning here.

“I’ll probably go to Mildura next week with Wrangler and may even take him to get the stakes up a bit more before Victor Harbor the weekend after that.

“Victor Harbor should suit him as he usually goes away well from the stand.”

As for his latest triumph, Cullenburn was pushed forward by Angela Chapman to find the lead from five.

Allowed to roll along at an even tempo, the son of Christian Cullen rated 1:56.2 over 1800 metres as Just Cappy and Breach The Beach filled the placings.

“He’s got gate speed and is pretty tough,” Cavallaro said. “He’s always hard to beat when he is up in the top few.”
