Hoping lightning strikes twice

A TRIP back to Kilmore is on the cards for handy trotter Money Talks.

With the gelding breaking a long drought from the winners’ circle at the provincial circuit last night, trainer Paul Railton figures he may as well try again!

As such, Money Talks is likely to return to the venue on July 22.

“There is a race for him there next week, but I’ll wait until the week after,:” Railton said. “That’s his first win in a while and the conditions suited him, so I’ll take him back and hope lightning can strike twice.

“It’s pretty much the same race as last night, so I know at the very least he will be competitive.”

With Railton in the cart, Money Talks was settled three-back along the pegs from barrier four as Patnwill lead the field in ‘Indian file’.

Angled three-wide around the home turn, Money Talks sprinted to a three-metre win from Patnwill, with Playa Del Carmen seven-and-a-half metres away third.

Rating a modest 2:08.1 over 2180 metres, the six-year-old registered his first win since May 2025.

“He has shown a lot of raw ability, but hasn’t clicked and put it together,” Railton said. “Some solid racing during the past 12 months has helped, and going on his last handful of starts you can see the improvement in him.

“I knew a win wasn’t far off and think he has a bit more in store.”

Also owned by Railton, Money Talks was the second leg of a double for underrated stallion Cardigan Boko, which sired the David Murphy-trained Met With A Shrug earlier on the card.

Enjoying a purple patch with his progeny, the Swedish-bred Cardigan Boko also produced a winner in Cranbourne a few nights earlier.

Cardigan Boko was “at death’s door” last October after suffering a severe bout of colic, but is “fighting fit” again at South Australian stud Bellmoure Park.
