Ideal time to break long drought

CONNECTIONS of consistent squaregaiter San Juan Mountain hope he can break his frustrating run of close calls this weekend.

Despite racing in strong form, San Juan Mountain has been unable to score since winning at Club Menangle on April 29, 2025.

During the interim, the John Ogden-trained gelding has been among the placegetters on seven occasions, including his last five starts.

To be more precise, San Juan Mountain has finished second at four of his last five outings, including his past two appearances.

“He has been so solid, but just can’t get that win on the board,” Ogden said. “He’s trying hard, but just keeps finding one a little bit better.

“He hasn’t had the luck go his way by getting the run he needs, but if he did it his record would look a lot different.

“I’d love to see him break that cycle on Saturday night, but it won’t be easy.”

Set to return to Club Menangle, San Juan Mountain is engaged in the $50,000 Four and Five-Year-old Trot Final.

To be driven by Ogden, the son of What The Hill has drawn barrier two, with TAB Fixed Odds listing the four-year-old at $3.20.

Malibuu heads the market at $2.25 from gate four for trainer Blake Fitzpatrick.

Ogden, however, considers Victorian raider Sebastians Waiting as the one to beat from six.

Prepared by Chris Svanosio, Sebastians Waiting is on the third line of betting at $4.

The son of Sebastian K scored first-up from a spell in Bendigo a fortnight ago.

“Sebastians Waiting is the one I would consider as the horse to beat,” Ogden said. “He was impressive in his last win.

“Malibuu is fresh from a break, but Blake is sure to have him in good condition.

“We’ve got a good draw and will have to go forward at the start and see what happens. He’s got gate speed, so I might as well use it.”
