FRESH from his successful Australian debut a fortnight ago, New Zealand raider B D Joe is in a strong position to advance to his primary target on Friday night.
Sent across the Tasman by respected horseman Steve Telfer in search of a Miracle Mile berth, B D Joe gave Aussies a glimpse of his potential when triumphant in 1:50.6 at Club Menangle on February 4.
This time around the son of Roll With Joe is engaged in the Newcastle Mile, which along with the lion’s share of the $100,000 purse, provides the winner with a ‘golden ticket’ to the Miracle Mile.
The southern hemisphere’s most prestigious sprint, the $1million Garrards-sponsored event is scheduled to be conducted at Club Menangle on March 4.
To Telfer’s delight, B D Joe has drawn to lead throughout his pending assignment after drawing the pole.
“It’s a perfect draw and hopefully he can make the most of it,” Telfer said. “I’m confident he can lead from there and he is pretty hard to run down when he is in front.
“I chose to go around this week to get into the Miracle Mile as the timing suits the way I train him better, so with a bit of luck it will work out how I want it to.”
Telfer will also be represented by Alta Wiseguy, which has drawn alongside his stablemate.
The son of Mach Three had no luck when unplaced at Club Menangle two weeks ago.
“Alta has plenty of high speed and can certainly upset the top ones on his night,” Telfer said. “If he settles close enough to the speed, which he should from the draw, he should be right in the finish.”
