LATE bloomer Gloria Council continued her strong start to the season when she prepared Rockella to score yesterday.

Beginning her training career during the 2011/12 term, Council has contested a dozen races in 2023 for a winning percentage of 25 and top three strike rate of 42 per cent.

Bred and owned by Council, Rockella has provided a pair of the 69-year-old’s victories.

“He has been doing a great job and went well again yesterday, which I was hoping he would do,” Council said.

“He has had a couple of tough runs this time in, and this was a drop back in class, so I thought he’d go close if driven quietly and let rip up the straight.

“Connor (Clarke) did a great job by driving him just that way and he won with plenty up his sleeve.”

Settled three-back in the running line from his second row draw, Rockella sprinted to a five-and-a-half metre win from Tossup.

The Stylist was a half-neck away third.

Rating 1:55.3 over 1700 metres, the son of Rock N Roll Heaven took his record to four wins and two seconds from 12 starts.

From a passionate industry family, Council simply “didn’t bother” following her father, the late Tim Bourke, into the sport before deciding to “have a shot at it” later in life.

“My father and brother (Barry) were in harness racing and had licences, but I went to Technical College and didn’t bother,” Council explained.

“One day I decided to get involved with a horse with my niece Donna (Bourke) and sister-in-law Myra (Bourke) and bred one out of my brother’s good mare and thought I may as well have a shot at it.

“My nephew Heath (Bourke) is also licenced and likes the breeding side and at the moment he’s got Rockfella’s dam in foal to A Rocknroll Dance.

“Heath bred Remi Lou, which won again at Melton on Saturday night.”
