LATE bloomer Swaffham Jack has a prime opportunity to end his debut season on a high at Globe Derby tonight.

Despite being in the veteran category as a soon-to-be eight-year-old, Swaffham Jack only began racing last March.

Proving to be a consistent performer, the Peter Badenoch-trained gelding has registered two wins and six placings from 11 starts, with his latest victory coming at the same venue on November 27.

“He was pretty much forgotten for five years,” Badenoch said. “Then when he was broken in, he wouldn’t pace a yard and would only trot.

“One day at the workouts he was trotting along when another went passed him and he skipped into a pace.

“It was suggested I alter his gear a little, including hopples, and he hasn’t missed a beat as a pacer since.

“He’s barely been out of the money, so we can’t have asked for much more from him.”

To be driven by Dean Girardi, Swaffham Jack has drawn to lead throughout from the pole, with Badenoch confident of success.

“He is in great form…he’s never gone better,” Badenoch said. “He sat in death and ran 1:58 for his last win, so hopefully he can go alright tonight.

“The tipsters don’t seem to give him a chance, but the horse doesn’t know that.

“I’m reasonably confident he will be right in it. He’s racing well, run good times and has the draw to use his gate speed which will see him lead early.”
