Look out boys, boom filly is heading your way!
BOOM squaregaiter Tough Love is about to face her biggest challenge.
Unbeaten from three starts this season, the exceptionally-bred youngster maintained her perfect campaign by capturing last night’s New South Wales Trotters’ Oaks at Club Menangle.
Naturally thrilled with Tough Love’s performance, trainer Rickie Alchin has revealed the filly will “take on the boys” in next week’s Derby.
The Group One will also be conducted at Club Menangle.
“It will depend on how she comes through last night’s run, but if she pulls up well we’ll take on the boys in the Derby next week,” Alchin said.
“It’s hard to pass up a $50,000 race in your own backyard, especially when she is in such terrific form.
“Without seeing the field and draw, I’m confident she will be competitive.”
Driven by Alchin during her latest victory, Tough Love led throughout from barrier three to score by a head from a gallant Amandine.
Taimate Sass was 28 metres away third.
“It got close at the finish, but she got there which is the main thing,” Alchin said. “She is a beautifully bred filly which gives every indication she can go a fair way.”
Rating 2:00.5 over 2300 metres, the daughter of Love You was the opening leg of a double for Alchin, who secured the Australian Pacing Gold Bullion Consolation with Captain Crusader.
Working to the lead from barrier six, the four-year-old covered the mile in 1:52.1 as Infinity Beach and Breivika filled the placings.
“As nice as it would have been for him to be in the Final, the Consolation is still a chance to pick up some good money,” Alchin said.
“I’m thinking of taking him to Queensland for the big races in July and will make a decision in the next month or so.”
