CONSISTENT pacer Childers Road marked a milestone outing with a timely win at Globe Derby yesterday.

Having his 150th start, Childers Road registered his 17th victory and first for trainer Melanie Kittel from 17 attempts.

A well-travelled gelding, Childers Road’s success was almost seven years to the day since making his debut in Melton on May 29, 2017.

Since then the son of Grinfromeartoear has had 11 stable changes!

“He’s been around a bit, passed through a few stables and had a few trainers,” Kittel said. “He has pretty much won or been among the placegetters for every trainer along the way as he is such a consistent type.

“To get a win at his 150th start is good, but I’m glad to get a win with him at any stage.”

With Jason Kittel in the cart, Childers Road began well from barrier two before being eased to take a trail behind Twin Connection, which led from the pole.

After enjoying the run of the race behind the pacemaker, Childers Road was angled into the passing lane to score by a half-neck from Boss Major.

In a ‘blanket’ finish, Twin Connection was a half-neck away third in 1:59.6 over 1800 metres.

“It was a perfect drive from Jason,” Kittel said. “I thought he could lead and said ‘try to cross at the start’, but Darren (Billinger) was keen to hold the front.

“At that point Jason waited to make sure Darren was going to keep the lead before he dropped on to the pegs which was the winning move.”
