REIGNING champion Valtino has kick-started his title defence campaign in the perfect manner.

Winner of last season’s Nutrien Final in Bendigo, Valtino is being readied for next month’s edition in Melton by trainer Blake Fitzpatrick.

First-up since his Vicbred Super Series success last September, Valtino proved too good at Club Menangle yesterday.

Pleased with the trotter’s effort, Fitzpatrick plans to give Valtino “another couple of starts” before heading south.

“He had a good long break which did him the world of good,” Fitzpatrick said. “He grew during his time off and has come back feeling a treat.

“I gave him a few trials before his first-up run and he progressed nicely after each hit out.

“It was only a small field yesterday, but some pretty talented young trotters in it, so while I had confidence in him, I wasn’t exactly over confident.

“The Nutrien series is his first main aim, so I will give him another couple of starts before we head to Victoria for that.

“He’ll then come home for the New South Wales Trotters’ Derby a few weeks later.”

With Fitzpatrick holding the reins, Valtino covered the mile in 2:00 as Karakajack Tooth and Tarentaise filled the placings.
