PREMIER horsewoman Emma Stewart seems to have developed a particular habit.

When Stewart wins Australia’s oldest classic – Victoria Derby – she also captures the Victoria Oaks in the same year!

The unusual coincidence began in 2017 when Our Little General secured the Derby and Miss Graceland captured the Oaks.

Four years later, Act Now and Ladies In Red claimed the Blue Ribands.

Fast forward to last night’s Melton program and Stewart did it again – this time with Petracca and Sweet Bella!

“I had no idea that was the case,” Stewart said. “Winning either of those races is a big thrill, but to collect them both is something special, just as it was tonight.”

With Cameron Hart holding the reins, Petracca scored by a half-neck from his stablemate, Perfect Class, with Captain Hammerhead three metres away third.

Rating 1:55.9 over 2760 metres, the colt’s time was eight-tenths of a second quicker than Sweet Bella.

Driven by David Moran, Sweet Bella finished strongly to beat her stablemate, Major Delight by a head.

Perfect In Pink – a half-sister to Our Little General and Ladies In Red – completed a Stewart trifecta when two-and-a-half metres away third.

In an phenomenal training feat, Stewart prepared the first five runners across the finish.

“It was a amazing result for the stable, and more importantly, our owners,” Stewart said.

For the record, Stewart also won the Oaks in 2012 with Beauty Secret and last season with Encipher.

“I guess if we happen to win the Derby in the future we can be more confident of our chances in the Oaks,” Stewart joked. “It would certainly be good if that’s how things worked!”
