ALREADY boasting a highly-decorated career, veteran trotter Tough Monarch added another distinction to his credit list last night.

Triumphant in a free-for-all at Club Menangle, Tough Monarch became the world class venue’s most successful competitor.

By capturing the open class event, the Rickie Alchin-trained gelding registered his 27th win around the 1400-metre circuit.

Heading into the meeting Tough Monarch shared the record for the most wins with Cash N Flow, Don Boston, Under Worked and Drop The Hammer, which was among the beaten brigade behind Tough Monarch.

Fifth upon his Menangle debut, Tough Monarch notched his initial win at the track a week later on April 26, 2016.

“This horse means so much to me and to have him claim a record like this is very satisfying,” Alchin said.

“He’s done a great job throughout his career and deserves any accolades that come his way.”

With Alchin in the cart, Tough Monarch led throughout from barrier seven to score by three-and-a-half metres from Aldebaran Tess.

Van Sank was a head away third.

Rating 1:57.4 over 2300 metres, Tough Monarch stretched his record to 36 wins and 18 placings from 106 starts for earnings of $592,305.

Amazingly, the 11-year-old’s four Group One wins have been at ‘away’ venues, but Alchin hopes that will change soon.

“His days of competing at the highest level on a regular basis are behind him, but he can still mix it with them on his night,” Alchin said.

“I’ll see how he is during the next week, but I’d like to give him another go at a Group One, which would be The Hammerhead Mile at Menangle in a couple of weeks.”
