Woddewick wuns them wagged….!

BLESSED are the punters who embraced the divine odds on offer for Welease Woddewick at Club Menangle yesterday.

Making his debut, Welease Woddewick sprinted “like a rat out of an aqueduct” to oppress Double Said by eight metres.

Explosive Bronski was three metres away third.

By covering the mile in 1:54.5, the son of Sweet Lou also bestowed talented reinsman Bailey McDonough with his initial success since migrating to New South Wales.

Prepared by prominent couple Mary and Joe Rando, Welease Woddewick scored at $9.50, with the runner-up the $2.80 favourite.

“We’ve had a few troubles with him and he is still very green, but after that run we’re certainly looking on the bright side of life,” Joe said. “He was ready to trial as a two-year-old when he was diagnosed with osteochondritis dissecans, commonly-known as OCD, in his hind hock.

“After he came back he cut the same leg with the cut infecting his splint bone which he then snapped in a trial, which meant he had to be boxed for another three months.

“He was gelded during his time off and since he came back he has calmed down so much he’s a completely different horse.

“He will go around again in a fortnight and then another fortnight after that before we go to the New South Wales Breeders’ Challenge heats in October.”

Named after a character quote in the movie masterpiece Life Of Brian, Welease Woddewick is not the first association the Randos have had with the 1979 comedy.

“We had a horse called The Life Of Brian five or six years ago,” Joe said. “He won a race in Penrith and looked like he was going to be alright but succumbed to injury and was retired after about a dozen starts.

“I’m not saying Woddewick is going to be the Messiah of racing, but he gives the impression he is a much better prospect than Brian.”
