PEOPLE across the Commonwealth were celebrating their new King during the weekend, but for harness racing enthusiasts, it was all about the Queen.
Undertaking what has become an annual trip, Queen Elida had onlookers bowing to her majestic ways as she produced a phenomenal performance at Club Menangle on Saturday night.
In what was her third appearance at the world class venue, Queen Elida blitzed her rivals in the Garrards Trotters’ Mile.
Queen Elida’s previous visits saw her finish second in the 2021 Trotters’ Oaks and victorious in the 2022 La Coocaracha.
With Chris Alford in the cart, the mare worked to the lead from barrier 10 before cruising to an 17-and-a-half metre win from Majestic Trio.
Im Ready Jet was a head away third.
Covering the mile in a slick 1:53, Queen Elida took her record to 22 wins and 12 placings from 39 starts for earnings of $479,325.
“We expected a big run from her, but gee, she went well,” trainer Brent Lilley said. “She’s won her last four and there is no doubt she is back to her best.
“She’s having a couple of light days now, then I’ll keep her ticking along for a couple of free-for-alls and mares’ races at Melton.
“At this stage she will have four more starts this time in, then have a break before I get her going again for the main races later in the year.”
