Bulletproof Boy equals unique Australian record

EVERGREEN gelding Bulletproof Boy equalled a unique Australian record last night.

While things didn’t go to plan in The Nullarbor at Gloucester Park, Bulletproof Boy pocketed $49,500 for his uplaced effort.

As such, the Scott Ewen-trained gelding became Australasia’s latest millionaire with a bankroll of $1,022,766 – the result of 53 wins, 31 seconds and 23 thirds from 231 starts.

“It’s the first time I’ve had a horse get anywhere a million,” Ewen said. “It’s another feather in his cap and I’m just rapt with him.

“He’s been a marvel to us…a once-in-a-lifetime horse.”

In joining the ‘Millionaire’s Club’, the Victorian became just the second pacer to earn seven figures without winning a Group One!

Successful in numerous features, Bulletproof Boy’s biggest victories have come in Group Twos.

The son of Art Official has won six races at that level as well as a Group Three.

When is comes to Group Ones, however, the 11-year-old has been void of luck, with just two thirds from nine attempts.

“To win $1million without a Group One is obviously no easy task,” Ewen said. “Maybe Group One luck will finally come his way next week in the Fremantle Cup.”

Bulletproof Boy’s latest milestone puts him on par with Karloo Mick, which earned a tidy $1,493,155 without enjoying Group One glory.

Karloo Mick captured three Group Twos and four Group Threes among his 64 wins.

The gelding was also among the placings 59 times – including 11 Group Ones!

Karloo Mick was runner-up in an Inter Dominion Final, A G Hunter Cup, Miracle Mile, Chariots Of Fire, the Winter Cup and three Treur Memorials.

He also finished third in an Inter Dominion Final and a Miracle Mile.

Just to highlight the difference a few metres can make, Karloo Mick collected $499,875 by running second in those Group Ones, while the winners amassed $1,863,875!
