LOCALS are hoping to break a long hoodoo at Globe Derby tomorrow night.

Disregarding last season’s edition, only one South Australian-trained pacer has won the state’s Derby this century!

Successful in 2011, Glengowan is the only ‘true’ local winner of the Derby since No Frolicking in 1996.

The reason last year’s version – won by Jawsoflincoln – doesn’t count, is that it was restricted to SA three-year-olds only.

With Harness Racing SA opening the border again, three Victorians will contest the Blue Riband.

That leaves seven locals to repel the challenge, including talented stablemates Hes All Torque and Nicely Spoken.

Both runner-up in their heats, the Ryan Hryhorec-trained duo have drawn to make their presence felt, which has seen them kept safe in betting markets at $12 and $15.

Prepared by premier Victorian horsewoman Emma Stewart, Our Vinnie is a $1.45 TAB Fixed Odds favourite despite his second row draw.

Pleased with his pair, Hryhorec has made the “very difficult decision” to partner Hes All Torque from the pole.

Victorian reinsman James Herbertson has picked up the drive behind Nicely Spoken, which will begin from barrier three.

“It was a very difficult decision to choose between them,” Hryhorec said. “From the draw, I think Hes All Torque is my best chance, which is why I went with him.

“I’m confident Hes All Torque can lead, which may be his best chance…run along and give the others something to chase.

“I was rapt with Nicely Spoken last week, and if he gets the right run, he certainly can upset them.”
