Difficult yet enviable decision to make
VICTORIAN reinsman Greg Sugars has a difficult, yet enviable, decision to make.
Sugars is the regular driver of Triple Eight and Better Eclipse which are among the top contenders for next week’s The Blacks A Fake.
Winner of the Mr Feeldgood Open Pace last weekend, Triple Eight finished at the tail of the field behind Better Eclipse in tonight’s Sunshine Sprint at Albion Park.
Sugars drove Better Eclipse to glory in the Group One.
Despite Triple Eight’s below best performance, he remains a strong contender for the $355,000 Grand Circuit event.
“It will depend on how they both come through tonight and the draw to some degree,” Sugars’ wife and trainer, Jess Tubbs said.
“I’d be surprised if Greg doesn’t drive Better Eclipse, but we’ll know more in the next few days.”
Caught in the ‘death seat’ from barrier four, Better Eclipse was eased forward to take the lead from Turn It Up.
Proving too slick along the home straight, the son of Betterthancheddar scored by a metre-and-a-half from Spirit Of St Louis along the sprint lane.
Turn It Up battled on to be head away third.
“That was a terrific run,” Tubbs said. “He did a bit of work early, but once he got to the front he was always going to be difficult to run down.
“I was very pleased with the way he found the line.”
Rating 1:52.2 over 1660 metres, Better Eclipse took his record to 10 wins and 12 placings from 29 starts for earnings of $492,610.
