THERE’S deja vu and there’s deja vu!

For veteran horseman Geoff Lawson, he was convinced he is stuck in the latter – a repetitive cycle destined never to be broken!

Training horses for a “pretty long time”, Lawson has had several members of his stable notch 13 wins…a figure his latest flagship, Alta Downs, reached in May 2022 after breaking an 11-month drought.

The son of Alta Christiano had since been found wanting during his next 22 starts, which netted seven seconds and five thirds.

“I’ve had a handful win 13 races and he was struck there too,” Lawson said. “It seems to be a number I couldn’t get past no matter how hard I tried.”

To Lawson’s delight, Alta Downs snapped the hoodoo when he broke another lengthy stint from the winners’ circle in Bathurst last night.

With John O’Shea in the cart, Alta Downs began quickly to lead from barrier two before being eased to take a trail behind Modern Power.

Finishing strongly along the sprint lane, the gelding scored by a metre from the pacemaker.

Terryrama was a short half-head away third in 1:55.6 over 1730 metres.

“It’s been a while between drinks for him and I thought he was going to be another stuck on 13 wins, but he finally got that 14th,” Lawson said.

“That’s now the most I have ever won with a horse, so he’s been a handy type.

“I’ll put him in again at Bathurst next week and then look at taking him to Menangle as he is going well enough for a shot there.

“He’s got a good turn of foot when he’s right and should go alright there over a mile.”
