Here’s a ‘rogue’ with the talent to match
PROMISING two-year-old Chappy Street North was the last yearling to be sold at auction by good producing stallion John Street North and was purchased by the Chapple family from Parkes breeder Tony Dumesny.
John Street North stood at Dumesny’s Ruby Vale Stud for several seasons before relocating to Yirribee Stud near Wagga but ended his stud career back with Dumesny at his Clarinda Park establishment, just south of Parkes.
The Chapples secured the colt for $8,000 at the 2020 Bathurst Gold Crown Sale and knew that he had potential as soon as they broke him in.
“The big fellow has been a real rogue right from day one,” said his trainer-driver Mitch Chapple.
“He has always had plenty of spirit, but you don’t mind that when they go as well as he does.
“We have always had a wrap on him and after he won his first race start, we knew definitely that we had a handy horse.”
Chappy Street North won on debut at Newcastle on June 18, recording a slick 1.56.8, racing clear to score by 12 metres.
He had shown that he possessed plenty of talent at the trials leading into that first-up win, with some impressive hit-outs, so there were some good form students wanting to let all and sundry know that he was the real deal.
“He is still learning how to race that’s for sure,” said Chapple.
“Hopefully, all will go to plan this afternoon [at Newcastle] for him to post another win.
“Our plan is to give him a short spell and then aim for a crack at the Breeders Challenge series which starts in September.
“I feel that he has the ability to win a heat of the series up this way and I would not under-estimate that he could be a real smoky come finals time if he happens to make it that far.”
Chappy Street North contests the TAB App Pace (Race 1) and despite drawing out in the middle of the front line, does appear to have class over his rivals.
“Gate five is probably the only concern that I have in today’s race,” said Chapple.
“But I will just poke him off the arm and look to balance him up so that he can get an opportunity to show his true potential.”
