IT TOOK a lot longer than desired, but astute horseman Tony Bertwistle finally notched a personal milestone yesterday.

Stuck on 99 wins for several months, Bertwistle reached the ton thanks to Sweet Paris’ success at Club Menangle.

Naturally pleased with the achievement, Bertwistle stated he is even happier to see Sweet Paris break her maiden, which also took longer than anticipated.

“I’ve been sitting on 99 for three months and have wanted to get the 100 out of the way,” Bertwistle said.

“It’s been one of those things that niggle at you like an itch you can’t scratch, so it is definitely good to get there.

“Sweet Paris is taking longer than we had hoped to show her true potential, but she has come a long way and I’m happy with the way she is racing.

“I’ve got her sister, Shanlou, which has won a few races for me and gone 1:50.7, so when the breeder offered my Paris I bought her.

“She was a real nut job – and still is to a degree – and I was ready to put her a on a plane and send her back to New Zealand.”

Rewarding Bertwistle for his patience, Sweet Paris completed a three-metre win from Parallel, with Tackas Last Dance four-and-a-half metres away third.

With Will Rixon in the cart, the daughter of Sweet Lou covered the mile in 1:54.3.

“This is only her second prep and she has done a much better job this time around,” Bertwistle said. “She’s had five starts for a win and three placings and has shown a lot of improvement.

“Her first prep was an education more than anything, and given how far she has come this year, I think she can get to weaker Saturday night races down the track.

“For now she will keep racing at Menangle as she’s a big mare and likes the bigger track.”
