Overdue spell after victory

AN OVERDUE spell is Madame West’s reward for breaking her maiden.

Prepared by Simon Diacono, Madame West ‘got the dough’ in Maryborough at her sixth start despite the horseman being not “100 per cent happy with her”.

“I haven’t been 100 per cent happy with her, but pushed on hoping she can get that win,” Diacono said.

“Her work hasn’t been how I would like, but she’s got the job done.

“She can for a holiday now…I’ll probably give her three months off.”

Providing a glimpse of her potential when runner-up during her previous outing a fortnight earlier, Madame West overcame a second row draw to register her initial success.

After enjoying the run of the race behind the leader, Lils Nightmare, Madame West was angled away from the pegs at the top of the home straight.

Quickly sprinting to the front, the daughter of Western Terror staved off a late charge from Wipe The Canvas to score by a short half-head.

Sunrise Ruby was two metres away third in 2:00.1.

Driven by Bailey McDonough, Madame West was bred by the concession reinsman’s father, Allan.

“She got the right run and was able to make the most of it,” Diacono said.

“I was doing work on a pizza shop at the time I was naming her and after the first six names got rejected, I chucked in Madame West, the name of the shop, and that’s what she got.”
