Patience rewarded as maiden “finally” broken

PATIENCE has been rewarded in the case of Quick Crunch.

Having her 24th start for the season, the three-year-old “finally” broke her maiden in Melton yesterday.

Thrilled to see the daughter of Captain Crunch make her way into the winners’ circle, trainer Taylor Ford hopes the victory is the “first of many to come.”

“Michael (Boots) bought her at the yearling sales and has been very patient with her,” Ford said. “She has shown some ability all along, but has just been a slow work in progress.

“Recently I changed her gear around by removing some of it and she has improved since.

“In her case less has been more as far as her being comfortable and racing better.

“I’m rapt she has finally won and hopefully that is the first of many to come.”

With Nathan Jack holding the reins, Quick Crunch was eased towards the tail of the field from barrier 11 as Royal Edard led from gate three.

Taken four-deep around the home turn, Quick Crunch unleashed a solid sprint to score by a metre-and-a-half from Miss Piggy Wiggy.

Taste It was four metres away third in 2:00.4 over 2240 metres.

“She went well during her start before when runner-up and her work had been strong since,” Ford said. “So I expected a pretty good effort from her.

“The draw was always a bit of a concern, but Nathan drove her a treat.

“She has been up for a while, but this is the best she has gone, so I will give her another start or two before she has a break.”
