Perfect tonic for astute horseman

ASTUTE horseman Dale Afford received the perfect tonic yesterday.

Heading to Globe Derby with five runners, Afford made the long journey home with a three winners.

Although Afford has trained trebles at his home track – Port Pirie – as well as Whyalla and Kadina, it’s the first time he’s had three winners on a card at headquarters.

Along with a personal milestone, the victories provided pain relief as Afford continues to recover from a shoulder reconstruction.

“I hurt it 10 or 12 years ago and have been having cortisone injections every couple of years,” Afford explained.

“This time I went in and doctor said it’s rooted and I’d have to have a reconstruction.

“I had the operation done so we didn’t race for three months and all the horses had a month off.

“My wife Minyon, dad Trevor and mate Terry have been working them for me while I bark the orders.

“I could drive the jogger, but I’ve only been driving in a cart for the last three weeks.

“It’s been 15 weeks and I can still barely put hand above me head. I’m alright in the driving position but it hurts if I move to an awkward spot.”

Afford admits the pain isn’t as bad this morning thanks to Alakazam, Ultimate Trouble and Indelible Mase.

Concession driver Tiana McMahon partnered Alakazam, with Ryan Hryhorec taking the reins behind the other two.

“The team went well yesterday,” Afford said.

“I have to admit I was painless on the way home and not really worried about it this morning!”
