Promising pacer to continue rapid rise

RISING star Cynical has drawn to continue his winning ways at Club Menangle tomorrow night.

Successful around the world class venue when first-up from a six-month break last weekend, Cynical should have no trouble repeating the dose against similar opposition for trainer David Thorn.

Undertaking a rapid rise through the grades, the son of Bettors Delight boasts five wins from seven starts.

Breaking stride before finishing last during his first two outings, Cynical has been faultless since.

“He’s a nice horse,” Thorn said. “We always thought he was alright, but he was just doing a few things wrong early on, so I changed a bit of gear with him and he hasn’t looked back since.”

Drawn to settle in a prominent position from barrier three, Cynical will once again be driven by ‘young gun’ reinsman Will Rixon.

“This looks like a good race for him,” Thorn said. “I wouldn’t normally back him up a week after a first-up run, but he did it that easily and is feeling so good, I put him in again.

“He pulled up a treat, has been eating and working terrifically, so I expect him to improve on the weekend.

“It’s a pretty even field with a few that’ll take some beating, but I’m confident enough with him.”

With no specific short term plans for the four-year-old, Thorn hopes Cynical can earn a berth in The Eureka later in the year.

Australia’s richest event, the $1.5million Slot Race is scheduled to be conducted at Club Menangle in November.

“I’ve nothing particular in mind for him at the moment,” Thorn said. “Just keep racing him through the grades.

“If he measures up, I’d like to think about The Eureka but that’s a long way off…time will tell!”
