Promising type or over achiever?

ASTUTE horseman Graham McDermott admits he may have to alter his opinion of Heres To You Jimmy.

Making his debut in Shepparton a fortnight ago, Heres To You Jimmy returned to the provincial circuit last night to remain unbeaten.

Originally labelling the son of Bacardi Lindy as “average”, McDermott is beginning to change his mind.

“He’s really surprised me,” McDermott said. “Honestly I think he is over achieving as I don’t think he is that well above average.

“At his first start I was paranoid he’d pull and not do his best, but he was switched right on.

“That was the case again last night. He has come such a long way in his races I might have to re-evaluate my plans with him.”

With McDermott in the cart, Heres To You Jimmy settled towards the tail of the field from his 10-metre handicap as Mystic Chip led from the pole.

Angled three-wide along the back straight, the squaregaiter sustained a strong sprint to score by four metres from the front runner, with The Majestic a metre-and-a-half away third.

Part-owned by McDermott’s daughter Morgan, Heres To You Jimmy rated 2:07 over 2190 metres.

“He went along very well, but I still don’t know if he has just been well placed for his two starts,” McDermott said. “Either way I’ll take it.

“He has been a real work in progress as he fractured a fetlock 18 months ago and has been head strong, but coming along well.

“I haven’t made up my mind what is next for him, perhaps a spell and then I will decide whether I should aim high and see how he goes in some of the better races later in the year.”
