Robbie’s happy to don the ‘teal’ for KerryAnn

LEADING driver Robbie Morris is set to ‘woman-up’ during the next six weeks.

No, he won’t be harness racing’s version of Tootsie!

With the Teal Pants Campaign beginning yesterday, Morris has joined the crew as a substitute for his wife, KerryAnn.

KerryAnn has been an active member of Teal Team since the chartable event went national – having originated as a Victorian-based initiative – but is unable to participate this year given she is ‘in foal’.

Disappointed she won’t be joining the squad, which consists of more than 260 reinswoman throughout Australia and New Zealand, KerryAnn was given the green light for Morris to be a ‘stand in’.

The sport’s ladies wear specially-designed teal pants between February 1 and March 14 to raise awareness and valuable funds for ANZGOG – Australia New Zealand Gynaecological Oncology Group.

Money is earned via each win during the campaign, with the various state governing bodies donating a set amount per victory, which is matched by the state’s major wagering company.

On average a win is worth $400 for the kitty.

In its seventh year, the Teal Pants Campaign has raised more than $2million.

“The Teal Pants Campaign is something KerryAnn feels passionate about and she is disappointed she won’t be out there doing her bit,” Morris said.

“So to help out, I will wear the teal when driving horses KerryAnn trains.

“Knowing how much it means to her, I’m more than happy to do my bit!”

Morris was quick to clarify this is a one-off arrangement.

“I’m only doing it this year,” Morris said. “It’s not a sign the men need to get involved too.

“To be honest, the women have done a tremendous job since this began and don’t need our help!”

Three Australian meetings were run yesterday, with ‘the girls’ making a tremendous start by registering six wins.

Victorian ambassador, Jackie Barker, kick-started proceedings with her triumph behind Down Under Earl in Horsham.
