Series shaping as a race in two
ANY lingering doubts as to whether the series was a ‘race in two’ were eradicated last night.
Among the best of their crop since making their debuts, Lochinvar Art and Hurricane Harley turned their Vicbred Super Series heats into one-act affairs, setting the scene for another stellar clash between the pair.
Lochinvar Art and Hurricane Harley have met nine times, with the former holder a five to four advantage.
Their most recent battle saw Hurricane Harley capture the Breeders’ Crown Four-Year-Old Championship three weeks ago in which Lochinvar Art was runner-up.
Not to take anything away from defending champion Out To Play, which won his heat in easy fashion, but few would argue Lochinvar Art and Hurricane Harley appear to have the futurity between themselves!
Given time to settle from his second row draw, Lochinvar Art was sent forward three-wide during the middle stages to work to the lead.
With trainer David Moran motionless in the cart, the son of Modern Art was never fully extended on his way to a four-metre win in 1:55.4 over 2150 metres.
“I’m more than happy with that run,” Moran said. “As I said before the race I went a little easy on him after his previous start so he could do with the hit out.
“He’ll be sharper again in the semis, and all going well, be right at his peak for the Final.”
Hurricane Harley then thrived on his favourite role as pacemaker after finding the front from barrier two.
Proving Kate Gath with an armchair drive, the son of Bettors Delight cruised to a soft eight-metre win in 1:54.2.
“He did that as easy as he pleased,” trainer Emma Stewart said. “It’s just the kind of run you want in a heat knowing there are still two more rounds to go.”
Gath then took the reins behind Out To Play for Stewart’s partner Clayton Tonkin.
Forced four-wide to avoid a check approaching the first turn, Out To Play was then eased forward to take the lead before completing a 1:57.2 victory.
