SPEEDSTER Expensive Ego proved he is on target for his third Australian Pacing Gold feature victory with a stunning display at Club Menangle yesterday.
First-up since his gusty second in the Miracle Mile on March 6, Expensive Ego won his APG heat in a brilliant 1:48.6 over a mile.
As such the Belinda McCarthy-trained entire has booked a berth in the $210,000 APG Final at Tabcorp Park Melton on May 1.
At two, Expensive Ego captured the 2019 Group One APG Final at Albion Park before securing the Group Two APG Championship in Menangle at his following start.
Pleased with the four-year-old’s performance, McCarthy stated Expensive Ego was destined to improve from his latest outing.
“He had a nice little break after the Miracle Mile, which has really brightened him up,” McCarthy said.
“His work had been pretty strong, so I knew he was ready to go well first-up.
“He’s still a little underdone and that run, along with another 10 days of track work, will tighten him right up for the Final.”
After causing a false start during the first attempt, Expensive Ego was on his best behaviour the second time around to settle behind the leader, Crunch Time.
Angled into the clear at the top of the home straight, the son of Rock N Roll Heaven was untouched by driver Luke McCarthy as he cruised to a 17-and-a-half metre win from Jay Ok.
Ilikemebettor, a stablemate of the winner, was a heads away third.
